AAA Financial Services Program Reaches $3 Billion in Deposits Providing Members Valuable Savings Options

ORLANDO, Fla., October 14, 2011

AAA’s three-and-a-half year old AAA Deposit Program with Discover Bank is celebrating a milestone accomplishment by reaching $3 billion in deposits, up from $2 billion only one year ago.  Members participating in the AAA Deposit program earn preferred member rates on FDIC-insured deposits.

Achieving the $3 billion milestone was driven by the AAA Deposit Program’s preferred member interest rates and the trust and security that members have in the AAA brand,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Vice President, Automotive and Financial Services.  “During these uncertain economic times, it is more important than ever for Americans to stay focused on their financial future.”

“AAA is pleased that members are utilizing the AAA Deposit Program to achieve their present and future savings goals,” continued Doney.

A sound financial strategy should include three types of savings: short-term savings accounts and money market accounts that are easily accessible; medium-term, pre-retirement savings accounts that generate extra income for retirement, such as certificates of deposits; and long-term savings for retirement with tax-advantaged options, such as individual retirement accounts.

The AAA Deposit Program is available at AAA.com/Deposits and offers AAA members these savings options, all with preferred member rates and FDIC insurance up to applicable limits:

Certificates of Deposit

The AAA Deposit Program’s backbone, Certificate of Deposit accounts offer no minimum deposit to open and terms from 3 months to 10 years, providing the flexibility to meet a variety of needs.

 Online Savings Accounts

AAA’s newest savings option is a highly-competitive online savings account, offering rates that are currently more than five times the national savings average1, a low $500 minimum deposit to open, plus no minimum balance required after opening.

 Money Market Accounts

Enjoy easy access while earning great interest rates.  Money Market accounts offer access by check, debit card, online and ATM. Make fast and easy online money transfers2, plus there’s no minimum deposit required to open3.

 Individual Retirement Accounts

The AAA Deposit program offers members both Traditional and Roth IRA CDs.  Secure a great rate, enjoy flexible terms from 3 months to 10 years, and watch your retirement savings grow with the tax-advantaged option that works best for you.

The AAA Deposit Program, or portions thereof, may not be available in all areas. AAA members can open AAA Deposit accounts at AAA.com/Deposits.

ORLANDO, Fla., August 3, 2011

One in four American drivers could not pay for a car repair of $2,000 if faced with one today, according to the results of a survey released by AAA. The survey also found one in eight would be unable to pay for a repair bill of $1,000.

Christie HydeMore than half of American drivers also said they are holding onto their older vehicle because they do not want the financial burden of a new one. And, one quarter of drivers admitted to neglecting repairs and maintenance on their vehicles in the past 12 months due to the economic climate, which AAA Automotive experts say can greatly increase the likelihood of their car needing a costly, major repair.

Additional Resources

“Economic conditions have taken their toll on many Americans resulting in them neglecting their cars and leaving them at increased risk for very expensive repair bills,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Vice President, Automotive and Financial Services. “Many Americans rely on their cars for their livelihood and losing access to them could be financially devastating during an already troubling economic time.

“It’s important for drivers to not only continue to maintain their vehicles, but also have a financial emergency plan in place should they be faced with a sudden unexpected auto repair bill,” continued Doney.

According to the survey, 38 percent of American drivers could pay for a $2,000 repair bill with funds in a savings account, while 20 percent would pay with their credit card. Eleven percent said they would have to borrow money from their friends, family, retirement or home equity in order to pay for a $2,000 repair.

Slightly more Americans reported being able to pay for a $1,000 repair bill with 46 percent saying they could use savings and 22 percent using a credit card. Fourteen percent would look to borrow from their friends, family, retirement or home equity.

AAA Automotive experts explain that a $1,000, $2,000 or higher repair bill can quickly appear – especially on older vehicles that have not been properly maintained. While repair costs can vary greatly by make, model and type of repair, a transmission repair can be $2,000 to $4,000, while an engine repair can exceed $5,000. Major brake repairs may range from $350 to $1,000, and a new set of tires can run from $300 to more than $1,000.

AAA offers several services to help members prepare for and save on costly repair bills including:

  • AAA Approved Auto Repair – AAA inspects and approves nearly 8,000 auto repair shops in the U.S. and Canada. Approved shops meet tough professional standards for customer service, cleanliness, equipment and training. All AAA members receive a free maintenance inspection upon request in conjunction with any other paid service. Additionally, many AAA Approved Auto Repair shops participate in the AAA Show Your Card & Save program, providing discounts on repair and maintenance to AAA members. A listing of nearby approved shops is available at AAA.com/Repair.

  • AAA Online Savings – AAA encourages Americans to have an emergency fund set aside for unexpected expenses such as costly auto repair bills. AAA offers an Online Savings Account through Discover Bank that provides easy access to funds in the event of an emergency. Additionally, the AAA Online Savings Account offers special AAA member-only interest rates, more than five times the national average, according to Informa Research Services, with interest compounded daily for maximum earnings. Members can open a AAA Online Savings Account at AAA.com/Deposits.

  • AAA Member Rewards Visa – For those who pay for auto repairs with their credit card, the AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card offers members an opportunity to earn vouchers good towards auto repairs at AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities. In addition to 2,500 bonus points, members receive one point for every dollar they spend, with triple points on AAA and travel purchases and double points on gas, grocery and drug store purchases. Members can redeem as little as 5,000 points for a voucher good at any AAA Approved Auto Repair facility, allowing this month’s repair bill to help pay for future ones. Members can apply for the AAA Member Rewards at AAA.com/CreditCard.

Some AAA products may not be available in all areas. Members should contact their local AAA club with questions about availability.

The telephone survey was conducted among a sample of 1,009 adults, 18 years of age and older, living in the continental United States. The survey has an average statistical error of ±3.6 percent at the 95 percent confidence level for all U.S. adults.

New AAA travel survey shows more travelers looking to take non-traditional vacation while appeal of traditional vacations decline

AAA and Bank of America today announced the launch of the new AAA Member Rewards Visa credit card from Bank of America. The card provides triple points on all qualifying travel and AAA purchases, double points for gas, grocery and drug store purchases and one point for every dollar spent on all other purchases.

“At a time when many credit card programs are cutting back on how consumers can earn points and rewards, AAA has developed a credit card for its members unlike any other on the market,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA National Vice President, Automotive and Financial Services. “The AAA Member Rewards Visa makes it easy to quickly accumulate points on everyday necessities, such as gasoline and groceries, in addition to substantial travel rewards.”

Concurrent to the launch of the credit card, AAA released findings of a new travel survey that show an increasing trend in non-traditional vacations. While 86 percent of Americans surveyed said they have taken a traditional vacation, such as a family vacation or romantic getaway, only 81 percent are considering taking one in the next year.

However, when asked about less traditional forms of travel, the AAA survey found there is an increased interest among Americans to take trips to learn a new skill, perform volunteer work, have a medical procedure or do something on their ‘bucket list.’ While 48 percent of respondents said they have taken one of the non-traditional vacations, 58 percent are considering doing so in the next year.

The AAA Member Rewards Visa card not only offers AAA members an opportunity to earn triple points on travel, but also allows points to be redeemed for vouchers for unique travel experiences for those seeking a non-traditional vacation.

“Whether you’re seeking a traditional family vacation or a new, exciting untraditional getaway, the AAA Member Rewards Visa offers rewards to help you get there. But the benefits are not just limited to travel. The AAA Member Rewards Visa brings together what AAA is best known for with the ability to redeem points for travel, auto repair, cash and more,” noted Doney.

“We’re pleased to build on our successful and long-standing affinity partnership with AAA,” said Andres De Armas, affinity card and banking executive for Bank of America. “This new AAA card delivers some of the richest travel rewards in the industry and provides enhanced value back to AAA members. The card offers their members maximum earning power and a wide variety of redemption choices – with no tiers or limits.”

Cardholders can redeem points for a variety of rewards, including:

  • AAA Branch Vouchers good for purchases at AAA branches—including travel
  • AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility Vouchers for purchases at any AAA approved facility
  • Cash—a full one percent cash back starting at 5000 points
  • Gift cards to more than 100 retailers, restaurants and more
  • Travel on major airlines with no blackout dates, hotel and car rentals
  • Merchandise including electronics, sporting goods and more.
  • Experiences – Joe Montana Winery, NASCAR Pit Crew, etc.

In addition to reward points, card member benefits include:

  • 2500 bonus points after first purchase within the first 90 days, enough for the first reward
  • No limit to the number of points earned
  • 24-hour access to concierge service
  • $500,000 automatic travel accident insurance

Bank of America is the leader in affinity card marketing and is endorsed by more than 1,600 organizations worldwide. “Through AAA’s partnership with Bank of America, we are able to leverage the power and prestige of both brands in the development of new products that provide maximum benefit to AAA members,” added Doney.

AAA partnership with Discover Bank gains further momentum as consumers seek safety and higher than average rates

“The adverse banking environment encountered by millions of consumers since 2007 has driven many Americans to explore offerings by customer-focused financial services providers,” said Mark Brown, AAA executive vice president for Association and Club Services. “AAA’s Deposit Program is proving extremely attractive because we are a strong and trusted organization that is able to offer outstanding rates of return with the security of FDIC insurance.”

AAA Deposit Program poised for additional growth

The AAA Deposit Program was launched in January of 2008 and exceeded $500 million in deposits after eight months in existence.
