WASHINGTON, D.C., (May 15, 2012) – AAA projects 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, an increase of 1.2 percent – or 500,000 travelers – from the 34.3 million people who traveled one year ago. The Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, May 24 to Monday, May 28.

“The overall domestic economic picture continues to improve slightly, however, American consumers faced a new challenge this year as steadily increasing gas prices throughout the spring significantly squeezed many household budgets,” said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. “Americans will still travel during the Memorial Day holiday weekend but, many will compensate for reduced travel budgets by staying closer to home and cutting entertainment dollars.”

Automobile adds to dominance as lead transportation choice, up 1.2 percent

Approximately 30.7 million people plan to drive to their destination, an increase of 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million who drove last year. Almost nine out of ten holiday travelers (88 percent) will take to the nation’s roadways during the Memorial Day weekend keeping automobile travel in the traditional lead as the dominate mode of holiday travel transportation.

Impact of gasoline prices on travel plans

A survey of intended travelers found that 53 percent said recent increases in gasoline prices would not impact their Memorial Day holiday travel plans. Of the remaining 47 percent of travelers who said gas prices would impact their travel plans, nine percent are planning to take a shorter trip, four percent will travel by an alternate mode of transportation and 34 percent will economize in other areas. Those who intend to economize in other areas plan to reduce spending on entertainment (65 percent), stay at a lower priced hotel (34 percent), stay with friends and relatives instead of reserving a hotel room (31 percent) or stay in a hotel that includes value-added amenities like free breakfast and internet (27 percent).

National gasoline prices may have peaked in April despite seasonal highs in early spring when motorists experienced average price increases for all but four days in February and March. April experienced a full reversal as prices fell for 23 of 30 days during the month, helping to break a streak of 911 days since the national average price was lower than the previous year. The current national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is approximately 25 cents lower than this time last year.

Number of air travelers expected to decline by 5.5 percent

More than 2.5 million leisure air travelers (over seven percent of holiday travelers) will fly during the holiday weekend, a 5.5 percent decrease from last year’s 2.7 million air travelers. The remaining 4.5 percent of holiday travelers are expected to travel by other modes, including rail, bus and watercraft.

Average travel distance significantly less than last year

According to a survey of traveler intentions, the average distance traveled by Americans during the Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to be 642 miles, which is 150 miles less than last year’s average travel distance of 792 miles. With high gas prices squeezing consumers’ spending power this spring, consumers are responding by traveling shorter distances this Memorial Day holiday.

The decline in expected air travel is a factor in the travel distance decrease as fewer flying miles can be contrasted with the slight growth in automobile travel. Miles flown for weekend travel are typically longer than those driven. Last year, the shortest trips, those less than 150 miles, made up 19 percent of total travel compared to 21 percent this year, reinforcing the expectation that shorter trips are especially popular this Memorial Day weekend. Median spending is expected to be $702, only slightly more than the $692 median spending last year.

Change in income demographics of Memorial Day Travelers

The growth in Memorial Day holiday travel can be tied, in part, to a change in the income demographics of Memorial Day holiday travelers compared to last year. Survey results reveal that the share of expected holiday travelers in the under $50K household income bracket has fallen five percent, from 31 percent to 26 percent. The share of expected travelers in the $50K-$100K household income bracket dropped one percent. Conversely, the share of travelers with household incomes over $100K increased six percent, from 30 percent to 36 percent. The effect of higher gas prices is more significant on lower income households as fuel costs make up a larger share of overall spending.

Car rental rates drop, hotel rates rise

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase eight percent from a year ago with travelers spending an average of $160 per night compared to $148 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels can expect to pay 10 percent more with an average cost of $120 per night. Weekend daily car rental rates will average $36, four percent ($2) less than last year.

Declining crude oil prices and renewed economic concerns have pressured the national average gas price steadily lower since early April.

AAA NewsRoom - Providing information to assist journalists working on stories in which AAA can offer considerable expertise.

(WASHINGTON, May 14, 2012) Declining crude oil prices and renewed economic concerns have pressured the national average gas price steadily lower since early April. The national average price at the pump has now declined for 28 consecutive days and is 21 cents lower than the April 6 peak of $3.94. This streak of declining prices is the longest since 2010, when prices dropped 21 cents from May 7 to June 3. If the current streak is extended tomorrow, it will be the longest streak since 2009, when prices declined 23 cents from June 22 to July 21.

Today’s national average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline is $3.73. This is five cents cheaper than the price one week ago, 17 cents cheaper than one month ago and 24 cents cheaper than one year ago.

A decline in the price at the pump has not been seen west of the Rocky Mountains, where tight gasoline inventories have sent prices higher even as crude oil prices and retail gas prices across the rest country have moved lower. While it is not unusual for gasoline stocks to decline at this time of year, as refineries undergo maintenance and the switchover from winter-blend to summer-blend gasoline takes place, current West Coast stocks, as reported last week by the Department of Energy, are at their lowest level since 1992. While 46 states and the District of Columbia have seen their price at the pump decline since April 14, Alaska (3.4 cents), Washington (7.1 cents), Oregon (8.5 cents), and California (11.6 cents) have seen prices increase. A full state-by-state list of month-over-month price changes is included below.

At the close of formal trading on the NYMEX today, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil settled down $1.35 at $94.78 per barrel. This is the lowest settlement price since December 19, 2011. Today’s declines were attributed to continued global economic concerns. Traders remain particularly focused on the euro zone, where Greek elections and a possible withdrawal from the currency following austerity measures to address sovereign debt worries have weighed on economic growth and markets. A weakening global economy would be expected to consume less crude oil, which puts downward pressure on prices. Furthermore, as economies overseas weaken relative to the U.S., the value of the dollar is expected to strengthen by being viewed as a “safer” currency. As this happens, crude oil futures, priced in U.S. dollars, become relatively more expensive and thus a less attractive investment, which puts additional downward pressure on prices.

These same global economic concerns pressured oil prices lower last week as Chinese industrial data failed to meet expectations and political news from Europe was viewed as bearish by market analysts. While U.S. consumer confidence was reported on Friday as increasing — in part due to falling gasoline prices in most regions — the broader global concerns weighed on U.S. commodities and equities markets alike as the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its largest weekly loss of 2012.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of bicycle commuters nationwide increased 40 percent from 2000 to 2010.

With more bicyclists on American roadways, AAA has partnered with the League to produce a series of bicycle safety videos, designed to educate both motorists and bicyclists on the importance of sharing the road. AAA’s newly redesigned ShareTheRoad.AAA.com offers bicycle and helmet fit guides, safety tips and riding skills advice.

“This spring, warmer weather is enticing more bicyclists to the roadways,” said AAA’s Traffic Safety Project Manager Rhonda Shah. “And sadly, in 2010, 628 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes and an additional 52,000 were injured.” As an advocate for the safety of travelers on both two wheels and four, AAA offers the following advice to motorists:

Share the road. Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, including the right to ride in the traffic lane

Slow down and allow at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist.

Check mirrors and blind spots before turning, changing lanes or opening car doors.

Never honk your horn at a bicyclist. They may startle and swerve off the road or into traffic.

Be especially cautious around children on bikes. They are often unsteady and unpredictable.

Stay alert and avoid all distractions while driving.

“This year’s theme for Bike Month — One Ride, Many Reasons — recognizes that cycling enhances our lives in countless ways, from keeping us fit to giving us a fun way to get to work,” said Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists. “We’re excited about AAA’s strong support of Bike Month and commitment to educate motorists, so every ride is safe and comfortable for drivers and bicyclists alike.”

As more bicyclists take to the roads, lawmakers have taken notice, too. With the help of the Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program, a growing number of cities and states are taking steps to improve biking in their communities. According to the most recent BFA survey:

The number of U.S. states with three-foot passing laws has grown by 64 percent in the last four years.

35 states currently have a Share the Road campaign.

To learn how you can share the road, visit AAA’s updated website for bicycle safety videos and other resources visit ShareTheRoad.AAA.com.

The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America. For more information or to support the League, visit bikeleague.org

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 53 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.

Welcoming One and Two Diamond lodgings offer enjoyable environments and easy access to beaches, mountains and popular vacation destinations

ORLANDO, Fla., (May 10, 2012) – As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, the unofficial start of the summer travel season, millions of travelers are beginning to plan road trips. For many, planning a vacation full of excitement and fun while staying within a comfortable budget can create anxiety. But with more than 31,000 AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotels, and more than a third of these at the One and Two Diamond Rating levels, AAA can help point the way to affordable options with appeal.

AAA evaluates lodgings on a scale of One to Five Diamonds, from budget-oriented hotels and motels offering basic accommodations to luxurious hotels and resorts offering extensive services and amenities — all with acceptable cleanliness, comfort and hospitality. For those seeking an exciting summer vacation without high costs, AAA inspectors have compiled a list of their favorite One and Two Diamond lodgings.

Read about rustic mountain cabins, charming beach-side motels and locations convenient to popular tourist destinations, all offering modest but memorable accommodations. A sampling of AAA inspector favorites is listed below. Access the complete list on the AAA travel blog at AAATravelViews.com.

Armada-By-The-Sea, Wildwood Crest, N.J., AAA Two Diamond Motel

This is one of the best of the many classic old motels along the Jersey Shore in the Wildwoods area. The beachfront motel is extremely well maintained, as the owners spend their time in the off season keeping it in top condition. The beach in this area is exceptionally wide, and the motel also offers a sparkling pool and large sundecks for lounging. An open green park next to the motel affords great southerly views. Rooms have a clean beachy décor with modest but comfortable furnishings, and many rooms have kitchenettes.

Au Pic de l’Aurore, Percé, Québec, AAA/CAA One Diamond Cottages

Rustic knotty pine cabins perched on a hilltop just outside of the town of Percé on the Gaspé Peninsula offer sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. This lobster-fishing village is famous for its Pierced Rock (Rocher Percé) natural arch, whale watching excursions and Bonaventure Island walking trails and bird sanctuary. Verandas and wood-burning stoves or fireplaces outfit the well-spaced cabins, some dating back to 1932. Wood-floored motel units and a large vacation home are also available. The lobby area, where boat tour tickets may be purchased, has an art gallery and a bar overlooking the coastline.

Best Western Inn of the Ozarks, Eureka Springs, Ark., AAA Two Diamond Hotel

This hotel accommodates a variety of traveler needs in an economical manner. Guests find plenty of nature in the wooded area that runs the length of the west side of the property. Sporting facilities include an outdoor basketball court and complimentary miniature golf in the game room. The pool area offers family friendly movies shown on a big screen (weather permitting) and a hot tub in the nearby gazebo. Insider tip: Visit Myrtie Mae’s, the on-site, home-style restaurant, for mouthwatering fried chicken prepared with a recipe dating back to the 1920s.

Mayberry Motor Inn, Mount Airy, N.C., AAA Two Diamond Motel

If coming to town in search of yesteryear Americana by way of the TV classic, “The Andy Griffith Show,” three things will complete the journey: a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch, a visit to the Andy Griffith Museum and a stay at the Mayberry Motor Inn. The vintage motor court offers large, clean rooms with simple, comfortable décor, and an outdoor pool open in summertime. The office is decorated with Andy Griffith memorabilia, and replicas of the sheriff’s squad car and Emmett’s pickup are out front.

Snowmass Mountain Chalet, Snowmass Village, Colo., AAA Two Diamond Hotel

Near the Village Mall, the well-known Aspen Snowmass Jazz Festival is held each summer directly across from the outdoor deck of this popular ski-in/ski-out slope-side chalet. Floor-to-ceiling windows surround the many seating arrangements and snug nooks that occupy the spacious lobby. Relaxing, reading, socializing, resting and — in winter — watching skiers and boarders have fun outside on the picturesque mountain will have guests thinking that they are part of a scene from a postcard.

Strawberry Creek Bunkhouse, Idyllwild, Calif., AAA One Diamond Motel

There aren’t any phones here, but Wi-Fi is available at this quaint establishment just north of the Village, where shops and restaurants abound in this mountain hamlet in Southern California. Besides the rustic, knotty pine-filled cozy guest rooms with balconies that overlook the forest, there are two cabins on property with fireplaces and private decks. Some units have full kitchens while others offer the basic efficiency; all are comfortably and attractively furnished. Hiking in the nearby woods is a popular pastime at this quiet yet memorable get-away-from-it-all lodging. Insider tip: Enjoy the free organic continental breakfast delivered to your door in a replica fishing basket, or opt for the Hike-to-Breakfast option for a hot gourmet breakfast at the nearby B & B.

Swan Motel, Stratford, Ontario, AAA/CAA Two Diamond Motel

The outstanding grounds and gardens are a highlight of this quaint family-run motel. The seasonally run property operates around the Stratford Shakespeare Festival schedule, which guests have made a tradition for a relaxing mini getaway. Original art adds interest to the comfortable rooms, and the large outdoor pool area is a great place to relax while reviewing show schedules. A short drive to town offers an abundance of fine restaurants and shops.

AAA provides tips for those looking to be more eco-friendly with their driving habits and next vehicle purchase.

ORLANDO, Fla., (May 8, 2012) – Hoping to decrease your carbon footprint and live a greener life? What and how you drive is a large part of your daily carbon footprint. Electric engines, several hybrid options and even traditional internal combustion engines have become more efficient and emit fewer greenhouse gasses. Even if you’re not in the market for a new car, AAA has tips to help you get the best efficiency and minimize greenhouse gasses no matter what you drive.

“There has been an influx of ‘green’ technologies by automakers into the market, which is great for consumers seeking a more environmentally-conscious choice for their next vehicle purchase,” said John Nielsen, AAA’s Director of Automotive Engineering and Repair. “Additionally, motorists not currently in the market for a new car can also make a difference by simply adjusting driving habits.”

VIDEO: New Vehicle Engine Technologies

The market for green cars is strengthening. Below are technologies to keep a look out for when in the market for a ‘green’ vehicle:

Electric Power

2012 has been an exciting year for full-electric vehicles (EV). These vehicles do not use gasoline and rely solely on battery power. With the average cost for a kilowatt hour of electric energy at approximately 12 cents, to fully charge an EV with a 24KWh battery pack would cost around $2.88. That works out to between 3.0 cents and 4.4 cents per mile for fuel. Making EV’s even more appealing and green; there is no need for oil changes, ignition system maintenance, fuel system service or exhaust pipe and muffler replacements. A stand out in this category is the Nissan Leaf.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Similar fuel economy can be realized in plug-in hybrid powertrains. These vehicles use a rechargeable battery pack that allows the car to travel up to 35 miles before the onboard gasoline engine starts. In some cars, this engine will provide power to the drive wheels. In other models this engine powers a generator that delivers power to the motor driving the vehicle while also recharging the batteries. Unlike fully electric vehicles, a plug-in hybrid is limited only by the range of its gas tank. The Toyota Prius PHEV and 2013 Ford Fusion are great examples of plug-ins in the marketplace today.

Gasoline-Electric Hybrids

Hitting the market hard in 2012, gasoline-electric hybrids like the Nissan Altima Hybrid and Honda Civic Hybrid use a gasoline engine and an electric motor. A full or parallel hybrid can run on either the gasoline or electric motor, or use both for maximum performance. A mild hybrid uses the electric motor to aid the gasoline engine, which must always be running when the car is moving. Full hybrids can travel on electric power alone. Hybrids never need to be plugged into a wall outlet or external charging station to keep the batteries at full power. The gasoline engine that powers the car also handles the task of recharging the batteries.

Compressed Natural Gas/Diesel Vehicles

Vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) marry efficiency with markedly reduced tailpipe emissions. While many gasoline-powered vehicles have been converted to run on compressed natural gas, which is relatively abundant and produced in the United States, the Honda Civic GX is the only sedan that comes from the factory with this ability. CNG vehicles use a standard piston engine.

Diesels are not often thought of as being “green,” but the latest generation of diesel vehicles produce fewer tailpipe emissions and significantly reduce carbon dioxide output. Today’s diesels are so clean they meet environmental standards in all states, including those that have adopted the more stringent California emissions rules. Among diesel powered cars, the Audi A3 is a standout.

Don’t forget More Efficient Gasoline Vehicles
Manufacturers are even updating or planning to update their current models to be environmentally friendly. Ford has launched their EcoBoost engines that use turbocharging technology, making it possible to use smaller, more fuel efficient engines that are still able to provide the levels of acceleration needed for safe merging and passing. The Chevrolet Cruze and new Dodge Dart will also offer turbocharged four-cylinder engines in place of larger and less economical engines.

For motorists that are not in the market for a new car, but want to decrease their carbon footprint, AAA suggests the following simple changes to lessen the impact of transportation on the environment:

Slow down. Decreasing vehicle speed by 10 mph can significantly increase fuel efficiency and decrease the associated carbon dioxide output.

Drive at a steady pace and anticipate traffic patterns. Accelerating rapidly then having to brake, wastes fuel and causes brakes to wear more quickly.

Plan your route in advance. Consolidate trips whenever possible and plan to travel during lighter traffic times.

Remove unneeded items from the trunk and avoid using the roof rack. Added weight and air resistance will cause more fuel to burn.

If your car has an “ECO” setting, use it. It will smooth out your gas pedal inputs; optimize transmission shift points and decrease air conditioners impact on the engine.

“AAA urges Congress to move quickly through conference negotiations and pass a surface transportation reauthorization bill. New legislation is now more than two years overdue and states have delayed many necessary highway and infrastructure projects as a result. This bill is one of the most important laws that Congress can pass because it provides for safe, reliable and effective transportation for all Americans.

“Transportation has historically been a bipartisan issue, and we are encouraged that both chambers of Congress are coming together today to begin the process of negotiating a compromise bill. The House and Senate agree more than they disagree on transportation policy issues, and it is important to work together in a spirit of cooperation to resolve the few differences that remain.”

(WASHINGTON, May 7, 2012) Crude oil prices declined sharply over the last week, and the national average price of gasoline at the pump has continued a steady, month-long decline. During this time the national average price has declined for 21 consecutive days and 28 of the previous 31. Today’s national average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline is $3.78. This is four cents cheaper than the price one week ago, 15 cents cheaper than one month ago and 20 cents cheaper than one year ago.

This Saturday, May 5, marked one year since the peak price of 2011: $3.98 per gallon. The peak price to date this year occurred exactly one month earlier on April 5 when the national average reached $3.94. Following the 2011 peak, prices fell for 50 of 54 days, decreasing by 44 cents during that period.

Oil futures recovered throughout the day today after global economic concerns pressured prices to an overnight low of $95.34 per barrel. At the close of formal trading on the NYMEX, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil settled down 55 cents at $97.94 per barrel, which is the lowest closing price since February 6. After settling at $106.16 last Tuesday — the highest price since late March — today’s settlement marked a decline of more than $9 per barrel in less than one week, which is the largest weekly decline of 2012.

The results of European elections over the weekend and growing global economic concerns weighed on markets today. Analysts viewed elections in both Greece and France as further evidence of limited support in those countries for the austerity measures enacted to address sovereign debt concerns. This news, in addition to bearish global economic data in recent weeks, has increased concerns of global economic weakness. Weaker economies overseas would be expected to consume less crude oil, which puts downward pressure on prices. Furthermore, as economies overseas weaken relative to the U.S., the value of the dollar would be expected to strengthen. As this happens, crude oil futures, priced in U.S. dollars, become relatively more expensive and thus a less attractive investment, which puts additional downward pressure on prices.

After rallying at the beginning of last week, crude oil futures reversed course following bearish manufacturing and jobs data from the euro zone on Wednesday, which outweighed signs of economic recovery in the U.S. and China. These losses accelerated on comments by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Secretary General that member countries would keep production high in an effort to depress global oil prices to a “fair” price of around $100 per barrel. While WTI crude has traded near this target in recent weeks, a price difference or “spread” between WTI (the traditional U.S. benchmark product) and more liquid, global crude products, most notably Brent crude, has developed since the beginning of 2011. This has led many to point to Brent as a more accurate benchmark for the global price of crude oil. Even after a selloff last week, Brent crude continues to trade at more than $110 per barrel.

The above information is intended to provide perspective on fuel prices to AAA club spokespersons in speaking to the news media or in preparing news releases. If you have questions about any information contained in this document, do not hesitate to contact Michael Green at (202) 942-2082.

Exclusive savings available on hotel stays, theme park tickets, car rentals and more

ORLANDO, Fla., (May 4, 2012) – As the summer travel season approaches many Americans will be carefully planning a vacation within their budget. A little research and advance planning can result in big savings. Last year AAA/CAA members saved nearly 2 billion dollars using AAA discounts and the Show Your Card & Save® program. AAA recommends travelers take advantage of cheaper prices by booking early and researching any available discounts such as those available to AAA members on hotels, car rentals and attraction tickets.

“Higher gas prices and tight household budgets continue to cause anxiety for some travelers who are currently planning a summer getaway,” said Gail Acebes, director, AAA Partnership Programs. “AAA is pleased to offer members many discounts on travel products and services that will ease the financial burden of a memorable vacation.”

AAA membership provides extensive discounts to make a summer getaway more affordable. The following is a partial list of travel discounts available to AAA members:

Lodging Discounts

AAA members who stay at AAA preferred hotels receive discounts ranging from five to 15 percent off the best available rate and the comfort of a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. Preferred hotels include Best Western, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, The Hilton Family including Hampton; Marriott brands including Renaissance; and Starwood Hotels & Resorts including Sheraton and Westin.

Lodgings vary greatly by cost and amenities. AAA categorizes its 31,000 AAA Approved hotels on a scale of One to Five Diamonds to help travelers identify properties that meet their needs and budget.

Car Rental Discounts

As the exclusive car rental partner of AAA, Hertz offers members a wide variety of money-saving discounts and exclusive offers. AAA member benefits include the guaranteed best rate available at time of reservation by booking channel; reduced rate for NeverLost®GPS, Hertz’s customized on-board navigational system, a discount on Hertz prepaid rates, a discount on the Fuel Purchase Option, no charge for additional qualified AAA drivers, free use of a child safety seat and more.

Savings on Train Travel and Sightseeing Activities

Whether heading home for a summer holiday or to another great North American destination, AAA members are eligible for exclusive savings on train travel. Members receive 10 percent off Amtrak passenger rail fares with three-day advance booking by visiting AAA.com/amtrak. Members also receive 10 percent off Gray Line sightseeing tours of one day or less by visiting AAA.com/grayline.

AAA offers discounts at some of the most popular attractions for a summer getaway. In addition to saving on tickets and admission fees, AAA members save 10 percent at select merchandise and dining locations at Universal Orlando® Resort and Universal Studios HollywoodSM. Visit a AAA office at home or at your destination for additional AAA area discounts.

Stock up on Summer Travel Supplies

Additional savings can be found on summer travel supplies including clothes, bathing suits, film, sunscreen and even a new book to read pool-side at many retailers including:

Target.com: $10 off online purchases of $100 or more

Banana Republic Factory Stores: 10 percent off on all purchases

Gap Outlet: 10 percent off on all purchases

Payless Shoesource: 10 percent off regularly priced merchandise

Travel Planning

Although last minute discounts can be found on travel, typically the best bargains and availability are accessible to those who book in advance. If you are planning a complex summer vacation consider visiting a travel agent. A qualified travel agent, such as your AAA travel agent, works directly with travel providers and will be better equipped to negotiate discounts for you and advise you on other savings or benefits that may be available.

Finding discounts on the road has never been easier. AAA now offers digital and mobile travel planning tools for travel planning ‘on the go’ including free apps that can map a route and locate AAA Discounts and gas prices near a user’s location. Visit AAA.com/mobile for more information.

Travelers can find AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants in the TourBook® guides available at AAA offices, the eTourBook guides at AAA.com/ebooks, online at AAA.com/Travel and from smartphones using AAA Mobile Web or the free apps at AAA.com/mobile.

Last year, members saved nearly $2 billion by taking advantage of AAA/CAA discounts including those available through the Show Your Card & Save® program. AAA’s Show Your Card & Save program is one of the largest member discount program in the world offering more than 164,000 locations for savings worldwide including 110,000 retail locations in North America and popular online retailers. Visit AAA.com/discounts for a complete list of retailers and offers.

(WASHINGTON, April 30, 2012) Bearish economic data weighed on oil prices this morning, however crude rallied late this afternoon to settle down just six cents at $104.87 per barrel at the close of formal trading on the NYMEX. Key factors that are resulting in downward pressure on crude oil prices include reports over the last several days that the U.S. and European economies might be slowing. European news highlighted a downgrading of Spain’s credit rating late last week as data reflected that the Spanish economy had recorded its second consecutive quarter of economic contraction, meaning that it is officially in recession. U.S. economic data reported today showed a decline in both manufacturing and consumer spending. Weaker economies domestically and overseas would be expected to consume less crude oil which puts downward pressure on prices.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices moved slightly higher last week, on a relatively quiet week for the futures markets. While Wednesday’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting did not yield the bullish headlines that have at times pressured markets higher, it did reaffirm the Federal Reserve’s commitment to keeping interest rates low through 2014 to promote growth. This policy is expected to put upward pressure on crude prices. The weekly Department of Energy report the same day counteracted some of that sentiment. The report showed continued demand destruction and a drawdown in crude oil and gasoline stocks that was not as dramatic as some market analysts had expected. Crude oil stocks increased by nearly four-million barrels to 373-million, and have some analysts suggesting that inventories may surpass 380-million barrels this year, which would not only surpass the 2011 peak (373.8 million barrels on May 27), but would be the highest level since before the Gulf War in August 1990.

Also keeping some downward pressure on crude prices has been the reported easing of geopolitical tensions with Iran, which is said to be considering steps to scale back its nuclear program following the escalation of international sanctions and political pressure since December of last year. Earlier this year, analysts estimated that a 20-30 dollar “risk premium” in global crude oil prices could be attributed to tensions with Iran. Continued easing of these tensions would be expected to lower this premium and keep downward pressure on futures prices.

February and March of this year saw the national average price at the pump increase for all but four days — rising 48 cents from $3.45 on February 1 to $3.93 on March 31. April has seen a full reversal of this trend as prices fell for 23 of 30 days during the month, and have now declined for 14 consecutive days — falling by nine cents during this most recent streak.

The current national average price for a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline is $3.82. This is four cents cheaper than the price one week ago, 11 cents cheaper than one month ago and also 11 cents cheaper than one year ago. This marks the seventh consecutive day that the national average price at the pump has been lower than the year ago level. Prior to last Tuesday, when this streak began, it had been 911 days (October 26, 2009) since the national average price for gas was lower than the same day the year prior. As of today, 40 states plus the District of Columbia have an average price at the pump that is lower than the price the same day last year. A full list of these states and each year-over-year difference is included at left.
