Vacation loyalists still traveling despite rising fuel costs

ORLANDO, Fla., (April 5, 2012) – Large numbers of vacation loyalists are still traveling despite rising fuel costs, according to a recent AAA travel agent survey and travel sales data.  AAA Travel’s lists of top summer vacation destinations include choices popular with American families for generations within the United States and around the world.  Many seasoned vacationers are expanding their travel horizons to exotic faraway lands.  While many Americans head to their computers when planning a summer getaway, planning a vacation can be overwhelming.  AAA Travel has seen a continuation of the number of vacationers seeking expert advice from a travel counselor to help guide their decisions, save countless hours of research and gain insight into popular destination.   AAA has more than 3,000 travel counselors located within more than 1,000 AAA Travel offices across the United States and Canada.

“Many Americans consider travel a mainstay to our way of life and are loyal vacationers,” said Bill Sutherland, vice president, AAA Travel Services. “While some Americans may modify their travel due to rising fuel costs, those who can are still choosing to travel and they are traversing the world.”

Last year, several airlines made cost-saving adjustments by reducing seating capacity, consolidating routes, and replacing large aircraft with smaller more fuel-efficient airplanes.  Following those capacity reductions and this year’s rising fuel costs, some travel suppliers including tour companies and cruise lines have begun offering price incentives to attract travelers.  Savvy summer vacationers have been taking advantage of those incentives especially for international travel.  Vacationers can visit the nearest AAA Travel office or AAA.com for more price incentive information.

Discounts available on hotel stays, theme park tickets, car rentals and more

Heather HunterPlanning ahead can help you save big on your summer vacation, AAA says. Although spur-of-the-moment trips are exciting, a little research and advance planning can result in big savings. AAA recommends travelers take advantage of cheaper prices by booking early and researching any available discounts such as those available to AAA members on hotels, car rentals and attraction tickets.

Although last minute discounts can be found, typically the best bargains and availability are accessible to those who book in advance. AAA.com features a variety of discount packages every day. If you are planning a complex summer vacation consider visiting a travel agent. A qualified travel agent, such as your AAA travel agent, works directly with travel providers and will be better equipped to negotiate discounts for you and advise you on other savings or benefits that may be available.

“Household budgets will continue to weigh heavily on summer travel decisions as many Americans continue to be concerned about the economy,” said Gail Acebes, director, AAA Partnership Programs. “We are pleased to offer members many discounts on travel products and services that will ease the financial burden of a memorable vacation.”

AAA membership provides extensive discounts to make a summer getaway more affordable. The following is a partial list of travel discounts available to AAA members:

Lodging Discounts

AAA members who stay at AAA preferred hotels receive discounts ranging from five to 15 percent off the best available rate and the comfort of a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. Preferred hotels include Best Western, Hampton, including The Hilton Family, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, Marriott brands including Renaissance, and Starwood Hotels & Resorts, including Sheraton and Westin.

Lodgings vary greatly by cost and amenities. Travelers can use the AAA Diamond Ratings to identify properties that meet their needs and budget. The AAA TourBook® listings, also available on AAA.com, include more than 31,000 AAA Approved and Diamond Rated® lodgings.

AAA members who visit AAA.com to book a room are more likely to find a better rate there than on other leading websites, according to a recent survey. A direct comparison of hotel rates offered on competing sites showed that AAA.com offered the lowest rate available 66 percent of the time.

Car rental discounts

As the exclusive car rental partner of AAA, Hertz offers members a wide variety of money-saving discounts and exclusive offers. AAA member benefits include the guaranteed best rate available at time of reservation by booking channel; reduced rate for NeverLost®GPS, Hertz’s customized on-board navigational system, a discount on Hertz prepaid rates, a discount on the Fuel Purchase Option, no charge for additional qualified AAA drivers, free use of a child safety seat and more.

Attraction Tickets

AAA offers discounts at some of the most popular attractions for a summer getaway including Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld, Six Flags, Sesame Place and many other great places. Visit a AAA office at home or at your destination for additional AAA area discounts.

Discounts are also available to members to help prepare for travel. If you are heading out of town and can’t take your pet, check out great savings from Fetch! Pet Care. Need sunscreen, sunglasses or other summer gear? Check out AAA’s shopping discounts at partners such as Target.com, Kmart.com, Sunglass Hut and more. ORLANDO, FLORIDA, February 2, 2010

Members use their card to save on travel, gifts, eyeglasses, automotive needs and more during down economy.

Heather HunterAAA discounts, including those available through the organization’s Show Your Card & Save® program, as well as discounts on hotel stays and automotive repair, saved AAA members more than $2 billion in 2009. Members that used the discounts saved on average $93 during the year, more than the cost of a basic AAA club membership. Sixty-one percent of AAA members utilized AAA discounts on everything from travel and restaurants to home electronics and prescription drugs during the year.

“The difficult economic climate of the past year made saving money a necessity for many families,” said Gail Acebes, director, AAA Partnership Programs. “We are pleased to know that our members are taking advantage of the discounts offered with AAA membership and we are committed to continually expanding AAA’s discount programs to offer members even more ways to save.”

AAA’s savings figures are based on AAA’s Show Your AAA Card & Save Awareness and Usage Study. The annual survey asks members about the savings they receive from AAA’s entire portfolio of discounts including AAA’s Show Your Card & Save program, AAA Travel Services, AAA Financial Services and AAA Automotive. Utilizing the benefits of membership, consumers can save on thousands of products and services from hotels and pet care and from auto repair to clothing. For a complete list of savings opportunities visit AAA.com/discounts.

The survey also showed that hotel and motel discounts are the most commonly used AAA discounts, with seven in ten (69 percent) members reporting that they have ever used that type of discount. One-half (51 percent) of all members have used travel services/product discounts, and approximately one-fourth have obtained discounts for attractions or theme parks tickets (28 percent) and automotive services (22 percent).

New discounts offered to members in 2009 include savings at Gap Outlet and Banana Republic Factory Stores and discounts on pet sitting services with Fetch Pet Care. In 2009, AAA also launched the AAA Discounts iPhone App, making it easier for members to find discounts. The free, GPS-based app displays Show Your Card & Save® partners near user locations.

AAA’s Show Your Card & Save program is the largest member discount program in the world offering more than 164,000 locations for savings worldwide including 110,000 retail locations in North America and popular online retailers including Target.com, FTD.com and more. Visit AAA.com/discounts for a complete list of retailers and offers.

Survey Methodology

AAA surveys members by telephone to monitor awareness and use of the Show Your Card & Save program and other savings opportunities available via AAA membership on an annual basis. The survey results have an overall error rate of +/-7.3 percentage points, meaning there is a 95% chance that the results found in this study are within plus or minus 7.3 percent of the results that would have been found if all AAA member households had been interviewed.

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 51 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.
