New chip technology will increase acceptance and security of AAA credit cards for consumers traveling and spending abroad

ORLANDO, Fla., (September 10, 2012) – Americans traveling to international destinations have been challenged by the technology gap between magnetic stripe credit cards issued in the United States and chip-enabled cards widely accepted abroad. AAA, North America’s largest leisure travel organization, announces the rollout of chip technology on its credit cards for current cardholders through our partner Bank of America.

“Chip-enabled cards will expand purchase options, add convenience and transaction security for Americans traveling abroad,” said Siobhan O’Donnell, director, AAA Financial Services Sales and Marketing. “We are pleased to provide this new technology to cardholders which will enhance their international travel experiences.”

Credit cards with chip technology, which is also known as EMV (EuroPayMasterCard Visa), are embedded with a microprocessor chip that encrypts and stores the account information. Many countries outside the United States have already converted from magnetic stripe to EMV chip technology.

AAA’s new chip-enabled credit cards will continue to prompt customers to sign for transactions just as they would today. The cards also include the traditional magnetic stripe, which is used by U.S. merchants.

Current AAA credit cardholders are able to request the chip card option by calling the customer service number on the back of their card. Chip cards will be rolled out for new cardholders later this year. For more information visit AAA.com/creditcard.

ORLANDO, Fla., October 14, 2011

AAA’s three-and-a-half year old AAA Deposit Program with Discover Bank is celebrating a milestone accomplishment by reaching $3 billion in deposits, up from $2 billion only one year ago.  Members participating in the AAA Deposit program earn preferred member rates on FDIC-insured deposits.

Achieving the $3 billion milestone was driven by the AAA Deposit Program’s preferred member interest rates and the trust and security that members have in the AAA brand,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Vice President, Automotive and Financial Services.  “During these uncertain economic times, it is more important than ever for Americans to stay focused on their financial future.”

“AAA is pleased that members are utilizing the AAA Deposit Program to achieve their present and future savings goals,” continued Doney.

A sound financial strategy should include three types of savings: short-term savings accounts and money market accounts that are easily accessible; medium-term, pre-retirement savings accounts that generate extra income for retirement, such as certificates of deposits; and long-term savings for retirement with tax-advantaged options, such as individual retirement accounts.

AAA’s Show Your Card & Save® program helps consumers save during the holiday crunch.

Heather HunterAAA is expecting North American shoppers to save more than $35 million this holiday season by taking advantage of member discounts at consumer electronic stores, booksellers, clothing boutiques and other retails establishments.

The prediction is based on forecast retail shopping data from AAA’s Show Your Card & Save® program during November and December, 2007. AAA’s Show Your Card & Save® program has more than 150,000 locations worldwide and is the largest member discount program in the world.

During the 2006 holiday season AAA members saved $34.5 million by taking advantage of Show Your Card & Save® promotions, a 23.5 percent increase from the $28 million saved the year before. AAA’s savings numbers are based on retail transactions that take place between November 1 and December 31.

With the average person expecting to spend $619 on gifts this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation, AAA’s member savings can help consumers get more for their money at the stores they like to shop at. “Our research has shown that that the vast majority of AAA members are unaware of the retail store savings that come along with their AAA membership,” said Tom Wilt, managing director of AAA Partnership Programs. “The same card that they use for emergency roadside assistance and free maps can also save them a lot of money on gift giving.”

AAA reminds shoppers who might plan to spend more conservatively this year that they can get more bang for their buck by using the membership cards that are sitting in their wallets. Through AAA’s Show Your Card & Save® program, AAA‘s 50 million members can save money at 110,000 locations in North America and save at the most popular place for consumers to shop – online. According to the NRF, the average consumer plans to do around 30 percent of their holiday shopping online, where AAA members can take advantage of discounts at popular stores such as Target.com, Barnesandnoble.com, FTD.com and more.

BarnesandNoble.com offers AAA members up to 40 percent off on many of the most popular books, DVDs and CDs through the Holiday Gift Guide from November 28 through December 10.
