Exams can indentify early signs of serious health conditions

Whether you are a college student having trouble seeing the front of the classroom, someone who wears corrective lenses or are fortunate not to be experiencing vision problems an annual eye exam can complement your wellness routine. Many people wait until they experience a problem to schedule an appointment, but they may be missing an opportunity to gather important information about their health. AAA members save 30 percent* on eye exams and if necessary an additional 30 percent on a complete pair of eyeglasses at LensCrafters, Sears Optical, Pearle Vision, and Target Optical.

Health professionals say comprehensive eye exams can detect the early signs of serious health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure and the onset of eye diseases including glaucoma and macular degeneration. In turn, early diagnosis of these diseases contributes to more successful treatment.

An eye exam gives the doctor an unobstructed view of blood vessels in the eye, allowing the doctor to see early signs of diabetes. If diabetes is left untreated, eye diseases such as retinopathy (damage to the retina), cataract (clouding of eye lens) and glaucoma (increased fluid pressure in the eye) could develop, blurring vision and eventually leading to blindness.

The American Diabetes Association reports that there are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware they are diabetic.

As we age, there is also greater risk for serious, sight-threatening conditions and these issues can affect driving. Problems may cause a gradual decline in vision and many individuals may not even be aware of this at the onset. To maintain healthy eyes, detect other possible medical conditions and retain clear vision AAA recommends making eye exams part of your wellness routine.
