WASHINGTON, DC (July 16, 2024) – Have you ever watched the Olympics on TV and thought to yourself “I’d love to see the Games in person one day”? You’re not alone. For many people, attending the Olympics is a bucket-list item. And nowadays more travelers, especially young people, are willing to go the extra mile for a live event. If you’re ready to stop dreaming about it and start making it happen, consider these tips from AAA.
Summer or Winter? The Olympic Games are held every two years in different cities around the world. After Paris, the next Olympics are the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy. In 2028, the Summer Olympics return to the United States and will be held in Los Angeles. Decide which experience you want – colder climate or warmer weather – and which location you prefer – overseas or closer to home!
Connect with a Travel Agent. Planning a big trip around a major event can feel overwhelming. Experienced travel agents can walk you through the process. Flights are released 11 months out, so if you’re considering the Italy Olympics in February 2026, you won’t be able to book flights until March 2025. Lodging may be one of your biggest expenses. For example, AAA booking data shows Paris hotels during the Summer Olympics are more than 100% more expensive this year compared to last.
Protect Your Investment. When you’re spending time and money planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip, you don’t want to leave much to chance. Obtaining travel insurance during the booking process protects you from unforeseen events, like medical emergencies or trip interruption.
Planning to Drive? If you’re planning to rent a car, consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP), which translates your driver’s license information into 10 languages. Some countries – including Italy – require it. AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized by the State Department to issue an IDP. But don’t apply for one too early: IDPs can’t be issued more than six months in advance of your trip.
Extend your Trip. After you’ve attended the Olympic events of your choice (always buy tickets through the official site), stay longer and explore other cities – or even countries – in the region! Trip Canvas, a free AAA travel planning tool, allows you to browse itineraries and get inspired. Your travel agent can find deals on tours that will immerse you in the culture and guide you through areas beyond the Olympic venues!
