World’s largest member discount program offers savings on everything from prescriptions and dietary needs to fitness equipment and eyeglasses

Heather HunterAAA is reminding members their Show Your Card & Save® program benefits can help ease financial pressures during difficult times with valuable discounts, including health care-related expenses. Members will find discounts on many products and services including, prescription medications, eyeglasses and fitness equipment, AAA said.

In 2008, out-of-pocket health care costs consumed approximately $3,000 of annual income per household, or about 6 percent of a typical household budget, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “For many Americans, particularly those currently unemployed, managing these costs has never been more important,” said Gail Acebes, Director, AAA Partnership Programs.

AAA members can save an average of 24 percent* on prescriptions at more than 59,000 participating pharmacies nationwide, including CVS/Pharmacy, Walgreens, Target Pharmacy, Walmart Pharmacy, and Rite Aid. For people that do not have prescription coverage, or those taking lifestyle drugs frequently not covered by insurance, the discount can offer substantial savings. Prescriptions for family pets that can be filled at a traditional pharmacy are also included. “There is nothing more important than maintaining personal health and the health of family members, yet when times are tough these needs can sometimes be shortchanged,” Acebes said. “This is one of the reasons AAA works with a range of partners to provide healthcare-related savings and benefits for our more than 51 million members.”

Non-Medicare program is not just for seniors or AAA members.

While Medicare is in the process of sending its users information on how to apply for help with drug costs this summer, AAA already has a simple solution that many may already be carrying in their wallet: the AAA Prescription Savings program.

With this program AAA members and their family members living in the same household can receive an average savings of 20 percent on prescription drugs at more than 54,000 pharmacy locations nationwide. It is free with a AAA membership, and the benefit extends to family members even if they are not AAA members, including children. The program can even be used to purchase pet medications at a discount.

“AAA Prescription Savings is most beneficial for the uninsured or under-insured,” said Tom Wilt, managing director, AAA Partnership Programs, “but it can also be helpful if a drug is not covered by a person’s insurance or if the insurance co-pay is higher than the cost of the drug.”

Unlike the new Medicare plan, AAA Prescription Savings has no restrictions on income, age, or the type of medication that can be purchased, and there is no deductible. Although savings are averaging more than 20 percent, greater discounts are available on generic and mail order prescriptions. Participating pharmacies include drug stores such as CVS and Rite Aid, and also discount and grocery stores such as Target and Publix.

“Even if you already have a discount prescription plan, insurance or Medicare,” said Wilt, “there is no additional cost for AAA Prescription Savings and you may be able to save more than what other programs are offering. You owe it to yourself to compare.”

For more information on AAA Prescription Savings or to enroll in the program, simply contact your local AAA office, call 866-AAA-SAVE (866-222-7283) or visit www.aaa.com/prescriptions.

AAA Prescription Savings is not an insurance plan. Savings are only available at participating pharmacies. Savings may vary by drug. The program administrator may obtain manufacturer rebates and other fees based on your prescription drug purchases. These rebates may be retained by the program administrator or shared with you and/or your pharmacy. As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 48 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers.
