Joined by New Vice Chair Anthony J. Buzzelli
to lead 117-Year-Old Federation
CHANDLER, Ariz. (May 7, 2019) – William (Bill) A. Mekrut was elected chair of the AAA Board of Directors at the 116th AAA Annual Meeting in Chandler, AZ on May 7, 2019. More than 230 delegates and club officials representing the federation’s 34 affiliated clubs in the U.S. and Canada were in attendance. Mekrut, the former vice chair of the AAA board, will serve as board chair for the 59 million member, not-for-profit federation for two one-year terms.
“AAA is a brand that is trusted by millions of consumers, and we must deliver the ultimate experience to our members through not only superior roadside service, but through competitive benefits and value-added programs,” said Mekrut. “I look forward to working with the AAA board and clubs to build upon our rich legacy, exploring and implementing new ways to delight and serve our members with the levels of innovation and service quality they have come to expect from us — at the roadside and beyond.”
In his role as chair, Mekrut will work closely with newly elected vice chair, Anthony (Tony) J. Buzzelli and AAA President and CEO Marshall Doney. This leadership team — drawing from diverse professional experience across the finance, insurance, healthcare and automotive industries as well as the arts and education — will guide AAA to meet the evolving needs of members through value-added travel, automotive, insurance services and partnerships.
Mekrut has been an active board member with AAA for 11 years both at a club in his home state of Rhode Island, and nationally. Additionally, he serves as a member of Providence College President’s Council, as an advisory board member of the Providence College School of Business and is a former chair of the Board of Delta Dental (Rhode Island). Most recently, he served as vice president and treasurer of FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial and industrial property insurers.
“Our nearly 60 million members put their trust in AAA to make their lives better and with Bill at the helm of the board, they can only expect that trust to grow,” said Marshall Doney, president and CEO of AAA. “He has already made an impact in the federation, utilizing his financial expertise and leadership skills to strengthen our organization and leadership position in roadside assistance. Together, he and Tony will be a positive force for AAA’s continued success.”
Vice Chair Tony Buzzelli is a retired vice chair and regional managing partner of Deloitte & Touche LLP. He was elected to the AAA Board of Directors in April 2017 and has served on the board of the Automobile Club of Southern California since 2011. In addition, Buzzelli serves on the boards of TriState Capital Holdings and MedStar Health, a not-for-profit, regional healthcare system in Maryland and Washington D.C, and was recognized as a Business Leader of the Year (Los Angeles) in 2010.
