Atlas® Van Lines, AAA, and American Trucking Associations® share tips for a safe and successful move

EVANSVILLE, IND. (April 30, 2023) — May is National Moving Month, and to celebrate, Atlas® Van Lines, AAA and American Trucking Associations (ATA)® are sharing tips for a safe and successful move.

“Moving can seem like a daunting task for millions of Americans each year. Choosing the right, trusted moving company can make the difference between a hassle-free process and a complicated, stressful situation,” said Ryan McConnell, President and COO, Atlas Van Lines. “We are thrilled to have long-standing partnerships with an extensive network of outstanding Agents, and with both AAA and ATA to ensure our customers receive the highest level of customer service throughout their moves.”

This year, Atlas is celebrating 75 years of business and countless moving miles, as well as millions of successful relocations around the world.

For almost 15 years, Atlas has worked alongside AAA to provide members with added peace of mind during their move and the confidence their belongings are safe.

“Let’s face it, moving can be stressful and costly. With the busiest moving season approaching, it is important to work with a reliable moving company,” said Scott Parker, Vice President of AAA Strategic Partnerships. “AAA is synonymous with safety and security, and we trust our national Discounts and Rewards partner Atlas Van Lines to provide peace of mind, knowing that your belongings will make it from point A to point B safely and securely.”

Additionally, Atlas is continuing its commitment to customers by being an ATA Certified ProMover. The ATA Moving & Storage Conference (ATA MSC) ProMover certification program gives consumers an easy way to separate reputable, professional movers from “rogue operators.”

“As peak season for the moving industry is right around the corner, the ATA MSC wants to remind consumers that it is important to research your moving company before embarking on your interstate move,” said ATA MSC Executive Director, Ryan Bowley. “We are proud to work with Atlas Van Lines and the many other moving companies across the country who are dedicated to high standards for quality, ethics, customer service, and professionalism.”

Individuals looking to relocate can ensure successful, and safe moves by working with reputable moving companies, thus avoiding unscrupulous actors who seek to take advantage of consumers, especially during peak moving season. It is important for consumers to do thorough research before embarking on a move. Atlas, AAA, and ATA encourage those looking to hire a moving company to:

Confirm your moving company’s credibility.

In 2020, the ATA created a Moving & Storage Conference to advocate for safety and security within the moving industry, and consumers can trust that the companies in the Conference are high-quality, reputable movers. Consumers should also visit the US Department of Transportation’s ProtectYourMove.gov website to verify the movers they are considering are properly licensed through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Atlas World Group and its network of Agents are FMCSA-compliant.

Research reviews and gather recommendations.

A smart step is to visit the Better Business Bureau website to review overall ratings, to check out consumer complaints about a potential mover and how the mover has responded to those complaints. Additionally, comb through reviews from previous customers online and reach out to your network either in person or on social media to ask for recommendations from people whose opinions you can trust and count on. For an increased level of security, Atlas is the first major mover to background check and screen Professional Van Operators and crew members through its No Stranger in Your Home program.

Look for warning signs.

Look for red flags that could signal trouble ahead before hiring a mover. While some moving companies may request a deposit, the majority of them will not. Instead, you will be asked to provide payment upon final delivery and completion of services. Companies should also be avoided if it is difficult to find any information about them online.

Keep an inventory of your belongings.

Taking photos of the contents prior to packing your belongings can serve as a good reference point for the condition of your items at the beginning of the moving process. It is also useful to keep a detailed inventory of your assets so that they can be accounted for at the end of the move.

Know your rights.

Consumers should read the FMCSA’s “Rights and Responsibilities” booklet, which is available at ProtectYourMove.gov, to understand more about the moving process and the paperwork. Another great resource for tips is ATA MSC’s www.moving.org website.
