Impaired Driving | Advocacy Playbook

Impaired driving is a preventable crisis, and we can all be part of the solution.
Each year, over 12,000 lives are lost and many more are forever changed due to impaired driving. In fact, alcohol impaired-driving deaths account for almost a third of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States each year. Drug-impaired driving is also on the rise, and research has continued to show that many drivers involved in serious crashes test positive for alcohol and other drugs. Impaired driving also often overlaps with other dangerous behaviors like speeding, drowsy driving, and not wearing seat belts—factors that greatly increase crash fatality risk. The facts are clear, curbing impaired driving will save lives. AAA and MADD are committed to doing just that, teaming up to reduce impaired driving deaths by 20% by 2030.
The resources below provide a clear picture of the current policy landscape around impaired driving and will help stakeholders, policy makers, journalists, and researchers understand and identify strategies to save lives.
