Summer Travel Tips

AAA’s travel experts offer their top tips for travelers planning summer vacations, including:

  • Plan ahead – Book early for the best deals and availability on hotels, airfare, car rentals and more.
  • Work with a travel agent – Travel agents often have access to extra amenities and added benefits to help plan the perfect summer vacation. They can also be a tremendous help in the event something changes or goes wrong on your trip.
  • Be flexible – If your schedule permits, avoid traveling during peak times this summer, including Memorial Day weekend and around Independence Day, to encounter less congestion and fewer crowds.
  • Safety first – If driving, get plenty of rest before setting out on your road trip. Schedule breaks every two hours or 100 miles to remain alert and avoid driving drowsy.
  • Make sure your vehicle is road trip ready – Take your vehicle to a trusted repair facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out. Pack an emergency kit that includes a mobile phone and car charger, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a basic toolkit, and drinking water and snacks for all passengers.
  • Pack your patience – Summer is one of the busiest travel times of the year. Expect heavy crowds and allow plenty of time to get to your destination safely.

To help travelers plan their summer vacations, AAA’s professional inspectors have assessed nearly 59,000 hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Every AAA Inspected & Approved hotel and restaurant is acceptable for the type of experience it provides. Ratings, from One to Five Diamonds, help travelers find the level of services, facilities and amenities they’re looking for on their vacation. Travelers can find Diamond Rated establishments in the AAA Mobile app, AAA Travel Guides and TripTik Travel Planner.

Move Over Baby Boomers, Millennials Embrace Family Travel

March 15th, 2018 by AAA Public Affairs

Julie HallAAA survey reveals an estimated 88 million Americans will take family trips this year.

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 15, 2018) – Led by millennials, some 88 million Americans plan to take family vacations this year. According to the latest research from AAA Travel, 44 percent of millennials are planning a family getaway, more than members of Generation X (39 percent) or baby boomers (32 percent).

“Just like generations before them, millennials see a family vacation as one of the best ways to create memories and reconnect with loved ones,” said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president of Travel and Publishing. “No matter their age, families are going on not just one, but multiple vacations throughout the year to revisit favorite destinations and experience new places.”

As travelers seek new sights, AAA expects family trips abroad to be a hot trend in 2018. Of families who will take a trip this year, 35 percent plan to visit an international destination – a nine percentage point increase from just two years ago. Based on advance travel bookings, AAA predicts the top five most likely international destinations for families will be:

  1. Cancun, Mexico
  2. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  3. Montego Bay, Jamaica
  4. Rome, Italy
  5. Dublin, Ireland

“We’ve seen increased demand for international travel overall, and that trend is now starting to appeal to families,” continued Sutherland.

For families staying stateside, expensive gas prices – the highest prices seen since 2014 – are not stopping vacation planners from packing up their cars for a road trip. They remain the most popular option for family vacations, with nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of those planning a trip expected to hit the roads.

Additional AAA family travel highlights for 2018:

  • Families are taking more trips per year. One in four (27 percent) traveling families is planning to take three or more family vacations in the next 12 months, 12 percentage points more than in 2016.
  • Family travelers are looking for new experiences. Three-quarters (73 percent) of families that are planning a vacation this year are seeking a destination they have not previously visited.
  • Families are seeking R&R. When looking for these new experiences, families are choosing destinations with attractions such as beaches and mountains (61 percent), opportunities for sightseeing (59 percent) and relaxation (56 percent).

AAA’s travel experts recommend that families plan their trips with AAA’s Diamonds in mind. AAA’s professional inspectors assess nearly 59,000 hotels and restaurants across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean to assign AAA Diamond Ratings.

To help families even further, AAA’s inspectors have identified some of their favorite family-friendly hotels for 2018. To learn more and begin planning a trip, visit AAA.com/TravelTips.

AAA’s family travel research is the result of a telephone survey (landline and cell phone) consisting of 1,005 adults living in the continental United States. Interviewing for this survey was conducted January 26-28, 2018. This study has an average statistical error of ±7 percent at the 95 percent confidence level for all U.S. adults.

AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner and TripTik Mobile app alleviate range anxiety for electric vehicle drivers

ORLANDO, Fla., (March 16, 2012) – To help early 1900s motorists plan their fuel stops,  AAA marked gas station locations on early strip maps. Jump ahead a century and, today, AAA helps ease range anxiety for EV drivers by identifying charging station locations in its digital mapping tools.

With a choice of the TripTik® Travel Planner on AAA.com or the free AAA TripTik Mobile app for smartphones, finding places to recharge electric vehicles before they run out of energy just got easier. Using these tools, EV motorists can locate more than 2,000 publicly available electric vehicle charging stations across the United States, including independent stations and those that are part of a network. Data is supplied by the U.S. Department of Energy.

To find charging stations near an address or along a route, users select a green plug icon to display locations on a map in TripTik Travel Planner or the TripTik Mobile app. Clicking on an icon opens a listing that provides the station address, hours, charger levels and, where available, a telephone number. App users can dial the listed numbers in a single touch to check station availability status.

“From the original strip maps used for road travel to the comprehensive array of print, online and mobile travel planning tools offered today, AAA has been providing motorists with relevant and accurate travel information for more than a century,” said Bill Wood, managing director, AAA Travel Publishing. “The addition of electric vehicle charging station locations to our digital mapping tools reinforces AAA’s commitment to providing members the information they need in formats they want.”

AAA’s online and mobile mapping tools also display gas station locations, along with frequently updated gas prices, and points of interest, such as AAA Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants. They also offer turn-by-turn directions and location information for user-entered addresses and other points of interest including attractions, events, AAA offices and Approved Auto Repair shops. The app can recalculate routes and provide voice guidance for the next maneuver.

All travelers can access AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner at AAA.com/travel. Smartphone users can download the free GPS-based AAA TripTik Mobile app from the iTunes Store or Android Market, or find more information at AAA.com/Mobile.

Additional GPS-based apps include AAA Discounts, which displays nearby member discount locations and AAA Roadside, which enables members who need roadside rescue to send AAA their location, vehicle description and breakdown details. The AAA Insurance app guides users on what to do immediately after a traffic collision, and AAA Auto Buying Tools helps prospective buyers build their ideal car and view pricing, ratings, AAA reviews and more.

Drivers Offset High Gas Prices

March 13th, 2012 by AAA

AAA Survey Reveals Habits Change to Save Money

WASHINGTON, D.C., (March 12, 2012) – With gas prices already up more than 50 cents  in 2012, AAA recently conducted a survey to identify how drivers are changing their behavior to help offset higher prices at the pump. As a result of current gas price increases, 84 percent of respondents have already changed their driving habits or lifestyle in some way. Combining trips and errands was the most commonly reported cost-cutting measure with 60 percent of respondents reporting having already made this adjustment.

Nearly nine in ten (87 percent) respondents would change their driving habits if prices remain at current levels for a sustained period. The ways they would adjust show some interesting differences compared to changes they’ve already considered or adopted. In particular, the recent increase in gas prices has led 16 percent of respondents to purchase or lease a more fuel-efficient vehicle.  Should prices remain at current levels, AAA survey results show that this number would more than double—jumping to 34 percent.

While motorists may have little control over the price of gas, they can control the impact of higher prices by following a few of AAA’s recommended tips:

Let AAA’s free app find lowest gas prices – AAA’s TripTik smartphone app also provides motorists with the most current and accurate gas price data available, by drawing on credit card transactions at more than 120,000 stations nationwide. Drivers can find the lowest gas prices close to home or on the road. The AAA app’s GPS technology enables users to quickly locate stations on a map and see the price for all available grades of gasoline. Visit AAA.com/Mobile.

Plan trips in advance- When running errands, try to combine multiple tasks into one trip. Several short trips starting with a cold engine each time can use twice as much gas as a longer multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm. Also, plan the route in advance to drive the fewest miles. Online mapping tools such as AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner are available to help plan routes and are free to all motorists at AAA.com.

AAA’s telephone survey consisted of 1,024 adults and was conducted March 1-4, 2012.

With the summer driving season approaching and gas prices near $4 per gallon, AAA expands mobile offerings to help plan road trips and compare costs

In just a few weeks millions of Americans will kick off the summer driving season with a Memorial Day getaway. With the current national average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline at $3.95, $1.04 more than last year, many travelers are concerned about how fuel prices will impact their budget. Those with an Android-compatible smart phone can save time comparing costs with the launch of an Android version of the AAA TripTik® Mobile application. The app, previously available for iPhone, also provides directions and information on restaurants, hotels and attractions.

AAA TripTik Mobile is a GPS-based app with maps showing gas station locations and other points of interest, such as hotels, restaurants and attractions, near a user’s location or any user-specified location. Gas station details include updated prices for all available grades of gasoline. Preference settings allow users to show prices for just their preferred grade and sort stations alphabetically or by distance. AAA membership is not required for the app, which is available for download at the Android Market.

AAA’s Memorial Day Forecast, which will be released in mid-May, will provide insight on how fuel prices will impact summer driving trends; however some travelers may offset expensive fuel costs by traveling a shorter distance, decreasing the duration of their trips or reducing spending in other areas of their travel budget. The free app, as well as AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner (available free at AAA.com) assists users in planning a summer getaway within their budget. These travel planning tools search and display gas prices, hotels, restaurants and attractions along a route or specific address.

Hotel and restaurant information includes AAA’s Diamond Ratings based on professional in-person inspections. There’s also an option to call for lodging reservations with the touch of a button. The AAA TripTik Mobile app also provides maps and turn-by-turn directions to other points of interest including local events, AAA offices and Approved Auto Repair facilities, as well as user-entered addresses. The app can recalculate routes and provide voice guidance for the next maneuver.

AAA TripTik Mobile uses the latest mapping data from the navigation market leader NAVTEQ. Full functionality on iPod Touch and non-3G iPad devices requires uninterrupted Wi-Fi access.

AAA TripTik Mobile is the third free app offered by AAA for iPhone and Android users. The AAA Discounts app, with more than a million total downloads, also uses GPS technology to display nearby AAA Show Your Card & Save locations. AAA Roadside enables AAA members who require emergency road service to send their vehicle description and breakdown details directly to AAA. Additional information is provided on AAA.com/mobile.

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 52 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. ORLANDO, Fla.,  January 13, 2011

AAA has released version 1.2 of the popular AAA TripTik® Mobile app for Apple iPhone users. The free app now combines the ability to download pre-planned trips with all of the tools needed for on-the-go travel planning.

Heather HunterTravelers can design routes with TripTik Travel Planner at AAA.com to include stops at AAA Diamond Rated and Approved lodgings and restaurants, attractions or any location along the way. Saved routes will generate a unique AAA TripTik ID to be used with the app to download the map and directions. The ID can be shared with multiple users and the entire downloaded route can be modified on the iPhone as needed. (Saving routes requires registration on AAA.com and may require AAA membership.)

The new Edit Trip feature in the app allows the addition and deletion of points of interest and the ability to modify the order of stopovers and origin and destination points. This feature also includes the ability to clear, save and access previously-downloaded trips.

“Making AAA online travel planning mobile and sharable was our most requested enhancement,” said Bill Wood, managing director, AAA Travel Publishing. “’The TripTik Mobile app now provides travelers access to pre-planned itineraries as well as the ability to route as they go.”

The AAA TripTik Mobile app is a GPS-based, mobile version of AAA.com’s TripTik Travel Planner, and similarly shows and spots AAA Approved hotels and restaurants, attractions, AAA offices and other points of interest near a user’s location. Hotel information includes AAA’s Diamond Ratings based on professional in-person inspections and the option to call for reservations with the touch of a button.

It’s the only free iPhone app that displays gas station locations with updated fuel prices from gas station data. A new preference has also been added to the “Settings” page allowing users to select stations based on a preferred fuel grade.

AAA TripTik Mobile also provides maps and turn-by-turn directions to other AAA points of interest including local events, AAA offices and Approved Auto Repair facilities as well as user-entered addresses. The app recalculates routes and provides voice guidance for the next maneuver at the press of a button or a shake of the iPhone.

AAA TripTik Mobile uses the latest mapping data from the navigation market leader NAVTEQ. Full functionality on iPod Touch and non-3G iPad devices requires uninterrupted Wi-Fi access.

AAA TripTik Mobile is the third free iPhone app offered by AAA. The AAA Discounts app, which has been downloaded more than 900,000 times, also uses GPS technology to display nearby AAA Show Your Card & Save locations. AAA Roadside enables AAA members who require emergency road service to send their location, vehicle description and breakdown details directly to AAA. The apps are available for download at the iTunes Store.

As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides nearly 52 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.
